Zapp's chaos finally gets its own spotlight, untethered from the ensemble weight that makes the TV series work so hard. The OVA remembers that this show's real engine is absurdist comedy wrapped around characters too stupid or stubborn to die, and lets that loose for a full 24 minutes. If you've been waiting for Kekkai Sensen to stop caring about plot for one night and just let Zapp be Zapp, this is the moment.
This single 24-minute OVA for Blood Blockade Battlefront & Beyond came out in 2018, packaged with the fifth volume of the Kekkai Sensen: Back 2 Back manga. It adapts two stories from that manga. The first, titled "Zapp Renfro Inga Oohou-juu!!", is based on a chapter from volume four. The second, "Bakkaadio no Shizuku", draws on a chapter from volume two. Viewers can expect a blend of action, comedy and the supernatural.
