Rin and Yukio finally stop spinning their wheels and start moving toward something that actually matters. The animation breathes again, and more importantly, the brothers' relationship becomes the story instead of backdrop, watching Yukio's control fracture while Rin pushes toward something he can't quite name hits with real weight. This saga knows what broke Blue Exorcist and fixed it: stop explaining the lore, start breaking the family that holds it together.

Rin and Yukio travel to the snowy country around Lake Towada in Aomori, searching for Shura, their fellow exorcist who suddenly went missing. There they find the place she was born, where Shiro became her guardian, and they learn of a decades-long contract binding her to a powerful, immortal demon. Meanwhile, demon activity is surging worldwide because of the Illuminati, and the Vatican moves the Exorcist Certification Exam forward. Lewin "Lightning" Light, one of the Arch Knights, comes to True Cross Academy to help the students prepare and to look into the Illuminati. He takes on a disheartened Bon as his apprentice, and his inquiry leads him back to the Blue Night and toward the hidden side of the Knights of the True Cross. The season continues the supernatural action fantasy that follows the Shimane Illuminati arc.
