Shen La works as a special investigator for the Poll Bureau, an agency that handles mysterious incidents. When a mission leaves him gravely wounded and close to death, he accepts a seed of mysterious power as an inheritance from Wu Rendi, director of the Sixth Office. After he wakes, his hair has turned white, and Wu Rendi's senior brother Guangren takes him on as a disciple. Searching for fragments of the Tianli Diagram, Shen La lives through a string of incidents, among them the Tianshan Wolf Tomb, an energy backlash and a foundation conspiracy. Wu Rendi eventually recognizes him and hands him an ancient artifact, the Twin Swords of Crime and Punishment. Meanwhile the question of an insider within the bureau grows more tangled, and Shen La returns to battle beside his partner Sun Desheng. Whether his new power is a hard-won opportunity or another trap remains an open question in this supernatural action adventure.
