Eleven-year-old Tsubasa Oozora lives and breathes soccer. What began as a pastime among friends has become an obsession, and he dreams of one day winning the FIFA World Cup for Japan. He lives with his mother while his father, a ship's captain, sails around the world. To sharpen his skills, Tsubasa moves with his mother to Nankatsu, a town known for its strong elementary school teams. He was the best player in his old town, but here the competition is far tougher. Soon he is challenged by Genzo Wakabayashi, a gifted goalkeeper, and the two agree to find out who is the better player. Along the way Tsubasa meets rivals and new friends, including Sanae Nakazawa. Wakabayashi shares his passion for the game and becomes a valued friend. A remake of the first series, based on Youichi Takahashi's manga, this sports action series shows a boy learning that talent alone will not carry him to his biggest goal.
