A girl transforms into a sword-swinging superhero and immediately knows what to do with that power because her father designed it that way. The movie treats this with total earnestness: no irony, no winking, just a teenage girl becoming exactly what her father built her to be and walking into hell to find him. It's Go Nagai the way Go Nagai actually works, crude, honest, and completely unashamed to be exactly what it is.

Honey Kisaragi is an ordinary, beautiful high school student until the evil organization Panther Claw kidnaps her scientist father. He has left her a device that lets her transform into Cutey Honey, a red-haired heroine who fights with a sword. This film version of the Cutey Honey Flash TV series sends Honey to a distant country, where she battles insect-like villains and finds herself in a forest filled with glowing green butterflies. As a shoujo-leaning spin-off of the larger Cutey Honey franchise, it plays its characters far cuter than other installments, mixing magical girl action and adventure with comedy, romance and science fiction.
