Kurumi finally gets a movie built entirely around her, and it does what the main series never could, lets her be the anchor of her own narrative instead of the obstacle in someone else's. The action sequences actually breathe here, using real spatial choreography instead of the TV show's convenience cuts. Twenty-four minutes is criminally short, but it's twenty-four minutes of animation and pacing that proves the franchise knew how to make Kurumi compelling all along.

Hibiki Higoromo, a white-haired quasi-spirit who goes by the name Empty and has lost her memory, wakes up in the Neighboring World and runs into Tokisaki Kurumi. Hibiki tells Kurumi that they are caught up in a killing game between quasi-spirits, in which the last one standing is granted a single wish. Once Kurumi understands the rules, the two agree to a temporary alliance. Kurumi takes Empty to a school where a number of semi-spirits have gathered, and a new battle gets underway. The film is the first part of Date A Bullet and is a sci-fi story.
