Makoto gets dropped into a fantasy world and immediately stops being the weak everyman, he's competent, he thinks, he acts before the plot moves him. Seven episodes of gorgeous backgrounds and character animation that still holds up because the OVA format meant every frame mattered. The whole thing slots together in reverse on rewatch, every throwaway joke and random scene suddenly revealing itself as setup, which is the opposite of how most isekai stumble around waiting for their own story to make sense.
Makoto Mizuhara stumbles upon an ancient monument hidden within his school, and when he awakens the mysterious woman inside, he is pulled into another world. He, his teacher Fujisawa, his rival Jinnai, and Jinnai's sister Nanami find themselves stranded in El Hazard, where each discovers they have been granted special powers. While Makoto and Fujisawa rescue a princess from giant insects in the jungle, Nanami ends up in a desert, and Jinnai lands directly in the bug kingdom and becomes its general. He plots to destroy Makoto and his new friends, but his attacks keep being turned back. The stakes rise when Jinnai learns of Ifurita, a demon said to be the ultimate weapon, and everyone sets out to find her. What begins as a search across El Hazard grows more complicated when Makoto learns that the demon is the same woman who sent them there. Adventure, comedy and romance mix in this seven-episode fantasy OVA.
