A Holstein cow knows she will be killed if she cannot breed. She falls in love with another female instead. The film never looks away from that impossibility, and it never needs to: the weight of the world pressing down on two beings who chose each other anyway is enough. Quiet sci-fi premises often hide profound statements about survival and desire. This one lets the premise disappear so you can feel what it costs to love when love itself is a death sentence.

Eri is a Holstein cow living in a world where any cow that does not give birth to calves is not permitted to stay. She has fallen for another female cow, and her yearning keeps her awake night after night as she wonders whether she will ever reach the one she loves. The film mixes drama, romance and science fiction, and is adapted from Kasumi Asakura's novel Who Else Is There?, published in 2008.
