Drossel von Flügel, a robot duchess, tells her guardian servant Gedächtnis that she has dreamed about a human. She believes peace with him must begin with finding common ground through words, which prompts Gedächtnis to lecture her on the way human language keeps evolving. The two live in a vast mansion they are not allowed to leave, since robots still have a complicated relationship with humanity and all transport to the outside was halted five thousand years earlier. Gedächtnis teaches his energetic pupil by quoting from old books written by her late father, and their conversations cover topics such as manners and poise, predicting the future, and mysterious servants found far below the mansion.
