Kana's group actually feels like real friends, not archetypes waiting for plot to happen. The show abandons the original's controlled chaos for something quieter, more grounded, which means when the mecha actually shows up it lands harder because you've spent time with these four just being stupid together. Alternative doesn't need to reinvent FLCL because it understands what made it work: the moment when your ordinary life gets interrupted and you have to choose whether to step into something bigger.

Seventeen-year-old Kana coasts through her junior year of high school with her close friend group of Mossan, Hijiri and Pets, in a small town where every day feels like the one before. To shake up their routine, the friends build a bottle rocket they hope to send into space, but a mecha crashes into it just as it is finished. Right behind it comes Haruko, a pink-haired woman who calls herself a Galactic Investigator. Her plans for Kana and her friends involve a force known as ATOMSK. What starts as strange encounters quickly spirals into chaos. Kana has to decide whether to help Haruko, even as new feelings, shifting friendships and boy troubles crowd into her once uneventful life. The comedy comes from watching ordinary teenagers grapple with extraordinary circumstances, with odd robots turning up at the worst possible moments.
