Every match is a small story about why this person cooks the way they do. Souma doesn't just win because he's hungry; he wins because he understands what his opponent actually needs, and then he burns them with it anyway. The pacing is relentless enough that you don't have time to think about whether the stakes make sense, you're just riding the adrenaline of watching someone figure out how to beat you with butter and confidence.

Souma's made it through the first cut at Totsuki Academy, but the real gauntlet is just beginning. With the qualifiers of the Autumn Elections finished, only eight first-year chefs remain, and they now meet in head-to-head cooking duels, each built around its own theme. Souma, a confident cook raised in his family's diner, must first win a bento showdown against the director's granddaughter, whose cooking leans heavily on chemistry. Megumi, Ryou, Akira, Hisako, Takumi and the ominous Subaru are also chasing the title. New judges and opponents with their own specialties keep him on his toes as he aims for the top. Expect comedy with ecchi touches.
