A kid with brown hair instead of white fights yokai in a graveyard where his dad is literally just an eyeball, and somehow this is the most comforting horror show ever made. The comedy lands because Kitaro never takes himself seriously, even when he's saving humans from demons that want to eat them. Hundred episodes means you're not solving the problem in three acts, you're living in this weird pocket of Japan where monsters and mortals coexist because they have to, because they always have.

Kitaro is a boy who makes his home in the Gegege Forest, a graveyard where many yokai roam. He shares it with his father, who is mostly dead and survives only as an eye, and with fellow residents Sunakake Babaa, Neko Musume and Konaki Jiji. This 2007 television retelling of the familiar Gegege no Kitaro story runs 100 episodes and blends comedy, fantasy and horror. One visible change sets this version apart from earlier ones: Kitaro has brown hair rather than his usual grayish silver.
