A 1970s manga brought to life exactly as it was drawn, crude jokes and all, with youkai extermination as the thinnest excuse for nonsense that actually lands. The comedy works because it commits to the bit, running puns that feel ancient and somehow funnier for it, battle sequences that treat demon-slaying like slapstick theater. This show knows it's disposable and makes that the entire point.
Tokyo's youkai problem has spiraled out of control. Malevolent spirits slip through the cracks between worlds, terrorizing citizens with no one the wiser. Hell's solution: send in the Youkai Patrol, a ragtag squad of underworld agents tasked with eliminating the supernatural threats before humanity catches on. Enma, the brash prince of hell, leads the charge alongside Princess Yukiko, the cunning Kapaeru, and the mysteriously powerful Grandpa Shappo. Their mission sounds straightforward until you factor in Enma's complete lack of subtlety, the squad's questionable competence, and the fact that 1970s Tokyo has no idea monsters are real. What follows is controlled chaos disguised as pest control. Between botched operations and supernatural mishaps, the team learns that exterminating youkai is far messier than any handbook suggests. The real challenge isn't always defeating the monsters,it's keeping the whole operation from falling apart. Expect comedic battles, ridiculous situations, and a protagonist whose hot-headed nature guarantees nothing goes according to plan. This is chaos with a purpose, where saving the world happens one screw-up at a time.
