It takes the most doom-soaked cast in otome anime and lets them breathe for once. These two shorts were a reward for the faithful, locked behind buying all six DVD volumes, which is exactly the kind of gatekeeping that makes them feel like contraband. One pulls from the Zuisouroku fandisc, the other is an officially sanctioned high school parody, and watching Hijikata, Okita and the rest of the Shinsengumi swap the fury of the Bakumatsu for school uniforms is the tonal whiplash the fandom quietly wanted. Comedy is the whole point here, no tragedy, no blood pact bills coming due, just the guys being idiots around Chizuru. It is short, it is fanservice in the purest sense of the word, and if you sat through the ending of the main series you have earned every minute of it.

Hakuouki receives two short bonus OVA episodes, given to buyers who collected every one of the six DVD volumes. One episode brings the fandisc game Hakuoki Zuisouroku to animation, and the other adapts Hakuoki SSL, an official parody that moves the story into a high school. Together they form a small extra release for a supernatural action drama.
