The three girls at the center of this show are so naturally drawn that their quiet crush on Tsuchida stops being a plot and becomes a genuine small truth about wanting to matter to someone. Nothing happens in Hanamaru Kindergarten, and that is the entire point. You watch Anzu scheme, Koume hide, Hiiragi cause chaos, and Tsuchida remain completely oblivious, and it lands with the warmth of something you remembered but couldn't quite place until now. Anzu attends Hanamaru Kindergarten with her friends, the shy, easily tearful Koume and the eccentric child prodigy Hiiragi. Together they compete for the attention of their teacher, Tsuchida, who is new to the job and nervous about being the school's first and only male teacher. Anzu insists that their love is fated and that she will one day become his bride, and her mother, who was Tsuchida's senior in high school, openly cheers her on. Tsuchida, meanwhile, would rather win over Yamamoto, the pretty and kind but oblivious teacher of the class next door, while trying to put an end to the rumors Anzu keeps starting. The result is a light romantic comedy of kindergarten life.
