A Buddhist sutra written without hesitation becomes a visual meditation that moves at the speed of revelation, not narrative. Munakata's brushwork demands something from you that most anime refuses to ask: patience, presence, silence. The film doesn't explain the Hannya Shingyo, it lets you watch a master's hand move across paper and trust that the power is real.

Keiichi Tanaami's film takes the Hannya Shingyo, the Buddhist Heart Sutra, as its subject. In his commentary, Tanaami traces his interest in the sutra to a fusuma, a paper sliding door, on which woodblock printmaker Shikou Munakata wrote out its full text in a single sitting, with no preparatory drawings. Tanaami says that door has held his attention ever since he first saw it.
