Rembrandt's painting doesn't survive contact with this film, it dissolves into pure visual thought, each brushstroke untethered and reassembled until you're watching paint think about itself. The animation isn't here to dazzle you. It's here to prove that deconstruction can be meditative, that taking something apart frame by frame is its own kind of looking.

A Rembrandt painting becomes the launching point for an experiment in visual deconstruction. The film starts from a single canvas and freely breaks it apart, then builds it back up into new arrangements. The short is the fifth entry in Kurosaka's Henkei Sakuhin series of experimental films, and it was the first work to win a prize at the Image Forum Festival.
