Joey finds a broken Heybo in the trash and fixes it with nothing but scraps and stubbornness, then lightning strikes and suddenly he's piloting a giant robot that shouldn't exist. The show doesn't pretend to be anything except what it is: a kid getting the one thing he dreamed about, except now he has to save his city from an alien invasion while still working his restaurant job to keep his grandmother alive. It's earnest in a way modern mecha won't let itself be anymore, no irony, no deconstruction, just a poor kid who earned something impossible and refuses to let it go to waste.

Joey scrapes by in Center City, working part-time to help his grandmother make ends meet. His dream toy, a cutting-edge Heybo robot, sits forever out of reach because of its price. When he rescues a damaged Heybo from the trash after bullies destroy it, Joey takes it home, repairs it himself and names it Heroman. One stormy night a lightning strike brings the robot to life, making it grow to a massive size and respond to Joey's commands. At the same time, an alien race called the Skrugg begins an invasion of Earth. Using a controller worn on his arm, Joey directs Heroman against the attackers and helps rescue people caught in the chaos. As the invasion continues, the boy and his giant robot stand between humanity and destruction in this action-packed mecha adventure.
