Three monsters hunt down human criminals, hoping cruelty will earn them humanity. The irony cuts deeper than the premise has any right to, especially when they're gentler to the kid they protect than the city around them is. The score doesn't just underline the story, it becomes the argument itself, turning 1968 into something that feels outside of time.
Three youkai, Bem, Bera and Bero, are born from a mass of cellular matter spilling out of control in a mysterious laboratory. Bem looks like a gangster, Bero like a boy, and Bera like a witch. Arriving in a large coastal city full of human wickedness and monster mischief, they decide to stay and fight the monsters and youkai that attack people. Several episodes involve them protecting a young boy. Humans often mistreat them because of their frightening looks, yet they keep defending the city, hoping their good deeds will one day let them become human. The result is a 1968 horror series about monsters acting as agents of justice.
