The races in 3rd Stage stop being about winning and start being about proving who you actually are. Takumi finally understands his father's obsession not because someone explains it to him, but because he's desperate enough to chase it himself. Takumi Fujiwara's street racing career reaches a crossroads when Ryosuke Takahashi, leader of the Akagi RedSuns, invites him to help form a professional racing team. Joining would be an ideal way to improve, but the recent high school graduate stays undecided. First he wants to settle a score: he calls for a rematch with Kyoichi Sudou, the Emperor leader who beat him after his AE86 broke down mid-race. Another challenge comes from Kai Kogashiwa, a street racer following in his father's footsteps, whose dad was once a bitter rival of Takumi's father, Bunta. Caught between vindication, ambition and old family rivalries, Takumi has to decide what kind of racer he wants to become.
