// WHY IT HITS

A kid fleeing colonial Kenya stumbles into a fever dream that escalates from survival thriller to monster movie to something genuinely unhinged, all in ninety minutes with the aesthetic of pure 1980s anime ambition. The pacing doesn't build, it sprints, cramming so much into the runtime that the seams show, but that's the point; this is what happens when creators refuse to choose between Tarzan, King Kong, and whatever else they wanted to make. You're either magnetized by that refusal to settle or completely alienated by the incoherence. Either way, you're watching something that only existed in this specific decade, in this specific medium, made by people who believed they could do it all.

SYNOPSIS

In 1941 Kenya, eleven-year-old Wataru belongs to a Japanese merchant family navigating colonial trade routes. When war erupts between Japan and the Allied forces, their comfortable existence shatters overnight. Forced to abandon their compound, Wataru finds himself alone in the vast African wilderness, separated from those he knows. What begins as desperate survival becomes something stranger and more wondrous. The bush itself becomes a character in Wataru's journey, filled with unexpected encounters and challenges that test his courage and resourcefulness. He discovers that escaping war means confronting nature's own trials: vast landscapes, unfamiliar dangers, and people who operate by rules entirely foreign to his Tokyo upbringing. The film captures a unique moment when a sheltered child must grow up instantly, stripped of civilization and forced to rely on instinct rather than privilege. Adventure here isn't romantic or distant. It's immediate, dangerous, and transformative. For viewers who appreciate coming-of-age stories grounded in historical specificity and the raw power of survival against overwhelming odds, this film offers something genuinely distinct.
