Kong Hongjun's crew aren't heroes yet, just specialists learning to trust each other against things that shouldn't exist, and watching them figure it out across episodes that look this good is worth the pacing stumbles along the way.

Kong Hongjun arrives in Chang'an during the Tianbao Period as a naive newcomer with three important tasks. His path leads him into the Great Tang's Exorcist Department, where yao prowl the city's streets. There he works alongside Li Jinglong, commander of the Longwu Army, at the head of a mismatched band of yao-hunting specialists. Kong is a half-yao raised on Mount Taiheng, and he must keep that secret from Li Jinglong, who hates yao. His tasks are to find his father's killer, wipe out the Black Jiao and the yao tribes that have slipped into Chang'an, and deliver the Heart Lamp to a descendant of the Chen family. On his first night in the city, Li Jinglong absorbs the lamp by mistake, so Kong must also find a way to recover it from his captain's body. Their team also includes another yao, a noble from a foreign land and a timid scholar. The result is an action fantasy built around exorcists clearing a capital city of demons.
