It weaponizes nostalgia and doesn't apologize for it: this is Macross Frontier's crew sitting down with Macross 7, and Ozma Lee's Fire Bomber fanboy streak finally getting the runtime it always deserved. Yes, it's largely recycled footage. It's also Basara Nekki flying a Valkyrie loaded with speaker pods at people who are actively trying to kill him, refusing to fire a single shot, screaming at them to listen instead. That premise was insane in 1994 and it is still the purest thing the franchise has ever done, which is exactly why the 30th anniversary project points its camera at it. Alto and Ranka and Sheryl are the frame, but Basara and Mylene are the payload. Watch it for the moment Ozma's guitar-hero worship stops being a running joke and starts sounding like a thesis statement.

In 2059, fifty years after Space War I, the colony fleet Macross Frontier travels across the galaxy in search of a new home, while fighting an ongoing war against a strange enemy known as the Vajra. Ozma Lee, who leads the S.M.S. Skull Team on the front lines, one day comes across an unknown lifeform that is unlike even the Vajra. The creature shows visual memories of another colonization fleet to Ozma, his stepsibling Ranka Lee, and her friend Sheryl Nome. The film pairs remastered and re-edited Macross 7 footage with newly made Macross Frontier scenes, and marks the thirtieth anniversary of the Macross franchise, mixing mecha action, music, romance and science fiction.
