It puts you back in that one summer and then makes you sit with the fact that it ended. Semishigure is half scrapbook, half epilogue: the Magicarat days, Mai Kozuki fumbling her card tricks, the flying squirrel doll Topo brought to life by a ball of light, the eighteen-year-old Emi she wore like a borrowed coat in front of her family and her crush. The title is literally the drone of cicadas, and that is exactly the register Pierrot is going for, a season you can hear ending while it is still happening. Nothing here is heavy, and that is the trick. The show never asks you to cry about lost magic, it just plays the summer back at you until you notice you already are. If you loved the TV run, this is the last look back before the lights go down on the stage.

Mai Kazuki is an eleven-year-old who dreams of performing in her grandparents' Magic Carat troupe, but her own tricks fall short. A mirror fairy named Topo, living in her stuffed flying squirrel, gives her a bracelet that becomes a bubble wand and turns her into Magical Emi, an 18-year-old magician who helps people and joins the family shows. She must hide her identity from her family and her crush. This single-episode comedy OVA opens with a recap of the TV series and then carries the story further.
