Rune Balot is a teenage prostitute scraping by in Mardock City until an ambitious casino manager named Shell takes her in and gives her everything she wants, along with a fabricated past and a new life. Grateful but curious about why he has done so much for her, she looks into his history on a computer. When Shell discovers her snooping, he tries to kill her by blowing up her car. Crime is so rampant in Mardock that a law called Scramble 09 lets police use extreme, normally illegal measures to revive crime witnesses. Under it, a professor saves Balot from death by rebuilding her entire body with reinforced synthetic fiber. When she wakes, confused, her thoughts gradually turn to revenge once Shell is revealed as the one who killed her. The film is a psychological science fiction action story.
