Amuro stops being a kid with a giant robot and becomes something the war needs him to be, whether he wants it or not. The second you realize what a Newtype actually is, the entire conflict shifts from "us versus them" into something bleaker. Operation Odessa is where this series stops asking if the Federation can win and starts asking what winning costs.

Back on Earth after returning from space, the Federation ship White Base and its prototype mobile suits find themselves deep in enemy territory. Amuro Ray and the rest of the crew must cross the planet's surface toward Jaburo, the headquarters of the Earth Federation. Along the way they run into new enemies, including some of Zeon's toughest fighters, and face overwhelming odds. They take part in Operation Odessa, a push to free the Earth from Zeon's grip. Lives are lost and new friendships form. As Gundam pilot, Amuro struggles with his own doubts and fears, and he comes to learn that he has the mysterious power of the Newtypes. This action mecha film roughly covers episodes 14 to 30 of the original Gundam TV series.
