Monogatari Second Season abandons plot almost entirely and just lives inside these characters' heads, which means every conversation is either the funniest thing you've heard or the most devastating depending on what emotional wire the show decides to cut that episode. Shaft's direction turns static frames and text overlays into something close to visual poetry, and the soundtrack knows exactly when to go quiet so you hear nothing but two people deciding who they actually are. This is character study as supernatural romance as comedy as philosophy, and it only works because the writing trusts you to care about these people more than any narrative payoff.

A new school term has begun, and supernatural beings are once again crossing paths with Koyomi Araragi and the girls around him, a senior who still carries traces of vampirism from an old bite. With the exorcist Meme Oshino gone, Koyomi has to handle these oddities on his own, and graduation is approaching. The season spans five stories centered on Tsubasa Hanekawa, Mayoi Hachikuji, Nadeko Sengoku, Shinobu Oshino and Hitagi Senjougahara. It opens while Koyomi is away: a tiger oddity targets Hanekawa after her home burns down, and Black Hanekawa resurfaces to protect her. Blending comedy, drama, mystery, romance and psychological tension, these stories turn on the girls' loneliness, their confessions and their departures.
