A magistrate squad built to fight giant bugs in Edo Tokyo sounds ridiculous until you realize the show means it. Each fighter has a completely different weapon and philosophy, so watching them coordinate against creatures that scale from "annoying pest" to "mountain-sized nightmare" never gets old. The tone swings hard between genuinely tense combat and pure comedy without breaking character. It knows exactly what it is and commits fully, which is rarer than it should be.

In Edo during the early 1700s, enormous monster-like insects are menacing the land, and ordinary people are too weak to fight them. After hearing the commoners through boxes set up for their opinions, the eighth shogun, Tokugawa Yoshimune, forms the Insect Magistrates, a unit of specialists who each have their own secret arts and fighting styles. The magistrates call on Genjuurou Tsukishima, a master swordsman from Tsugaru Province, but an unfortunate incident keeps him from going, so he sends his son Jinbee instead. Resolved to make amends for an incident his own cowardice caused, Jinbee heads to Edo, joins the magistrates, and vows to grow into a stronger samurai and wipe out the insect threat. The show mixes action, fantasy and ecchi.
