The animation alone justifies the detour, every frame of Eris moving through the fantasy world feels lived-in, tactile, expensive in a way most shows reserve for climactic moments. This special doesn't pretend to be more than a goblin-slaying sidequest, but it uses that simplicity to show Eris growing up without making it heavy. A conceited mage gets in her way, she handles it, and you watch someone become competent instead of just powerful.

While the Dead End party stays in the capital of Millishion, its members split up for a day to handle their own business. Rudeus reunites with his father, and the swordswoman Eris sets out to realize her dream of hunting goblins. At the Adventurers' Guild she meets Cliff Grimoire, a conceited but gifted mage. Eris wants nothing to do with him, yet he insists on tagging along and challenges her to brave the dangerous forest outside the city. She accepts, and in the woods the pair run into something far nastier than goblins. The fantasy adventure special was never broadcast and was released on the fourth Blu-ray volume.
