Judy Abbott is an orphan in New York in the early twentieth century, and she has a gift for writing. At a meeting attended by the superintendent and wealthy guests, a mysterious benefactor offers her a scholarship. She glimpses only his tall shadow as he leaves, so she nicknames him "Daddy Long Legs." His one condition is that she write him a letter every month, without expecting a reply. She knows nothing about him, not even his name. At Lincoln Memorial school she makes many friends and discovers a world she never knew. Based on Jean Webster's 1912 novel, the series blends comedy, romance and slice of life.
