The prince you're chasing is a ghost story you keep rewriting. Utena builds a world where every duel, every rose, every uniform choice is a sentence in a conversation about who gets to decide what you become, and by episode twenty you realize the show has been describing your own life the entire time. It breaks its own rules so it can show you why the rules were breaking you first.

Utena arrives at Ohtori Academy wearing a boy's uniform, inspired by a prince who comforted her years ago after her parents died and left her a ring bearing a rose crest. When a member of the Student Council insults her friend, Utena fights a duel to defend that friend's honor. Her rose crest ring lets her into the dueling arena, where she wins and finds herself engaged to Anthy Himemiya, the Rose Bride. Without realizing it, Utena is drawn into a string of duels against other Student Council members who want to claim Anthy, said to hold great power. Angered at seeing Anthy treated as a prize and growing fond of her, Utena resolves to keep fighting to protect her while trying to uncover the horrifying secret behind the academy. The series mixes action, romance and fantasy with psychological drama and mystery.
