More than a decade ago, a viral outbreak changed how the human brain works, and beings once dismissed as imagination, such as ghosts and monsters, turned out to be real. They are now called phantoms, and children born since then can develop special powers. Haruhiko Ichijo, a well-read first-year at Hosea Academy, summons and seals phantoms by drawing them, with the cheerful phantom Ruru always at his side. He belongs to Team E, a phantom-hunting club with little standing at the school. His energetic senior Mai Kawakami fights using the Spirit of Five Elements, newcomer Reina Izumi seals phantoms by eating them, and the stoic Koito Minase at first prefers to work alone. Taking jobs from their teacher Arisu Himeno, they deal with mischievous and sometimes dangerous phantoms while living through the highs and lows of school life, until an incident leads them toward the truth about their world.
