This show moves quietly. It doesn't announce what it's doing, a kid with a cursed book of demon names meeting spirits one by one, learning their actual names, their actual stories, and then it breaks you with something small: a yokai who just wanted to be remembered, a friendship that cost someone everything, a boy realizing he was never alone. The season isn't building toward anything. It's already there, in the space between Natsume and whatever ghost shows up at his door, waiting to be seen.

Takashi Natsume can see youkai, spirits invisible to almost everyone else, and he keeps this gift hidden from his new family and friends so their calm everyday life stays undisturbed. He still treats kind youkai gently, giving back their names through the Book of Friends left to him by his late grandmother, Reiko. The Matoba clan of exorcists wants Natsume among them because his power is so strong, but he refuses. Unlike his friend Shuuichi Natori, many exorcists seal away any youkai they meet without care. Displeased, Seiji Matoba pressures Natsume into attending a large meeting of influential exorcist families, where he is surrounded by dangerous people and youkai. Even so, he pushes back against the exorcists' harsh ways and holds on to the hope that humans and youkai can live in peace.
