Nobody talks about this one. Nobunaga no Shinobi runs on a rhythm that most comedy shorts don't even attempt: absurdist gags land in rapid-fire succession, but the real joke is always the relationship between Oda Nobunaga and Ren, his ninja servant who treats his historical ambitions like a chore she'd rather not deal with. The show commits to its premise completely, historical figures rendered as a deadpan comedy duo, and repeats the joke so hard it loops back into something genuinely smart about the gap between legend and the actual person behind it. By season three, you're not laughing at the gags anymore. You're laughing because these two have been doing this for so long they've stopped trying to impress each other. That's the whole show, and it works.

Chidori, the young female ninja who swore to serve Oda Nobunaga in his drive to unify Japan, returns for a third season of short comedy episodes. Nobunaga's dear sister Ichi is now the wife of Azai Nagamasa, yet war between the combined Azai and Asakura forces and the Oda army can no longer be avoided. At the Battle of Anegawa, a single moment of doubt could cost either side something precious, and it is there that Chidori, who has long held back her tears, awakens. In the struggle to unite the country, even brothers may end up on opposing sides.
