This is what One Piece looks like when a studio decides to animate it like it matters. The cel work has weight and shadow that the TV series never quite catches, and every frame of Luffy and Zoro moving through Ganzack's base feels like watching the manga come alive in a way that's specific to 1998. The story is pure setup and rescue, no filler philosophy, no stretched battles, just three people walking into danger because someone needs saving. It costs you 45 minutes. You get back a piece of why you started watching this series in the first place.
Luffy, Zoro and Nami are adrift and starving on their little boat when a long-necked dragon attacks. The creature wrecks the boat and carries Nami off, while Luffy and Zoro wash up on an island. There they meet a girl named Medaka and learn that the pirate Ganzack has taken the village men, her father among them, and forced them into slave labor building his base and ship. Together with Medaka, the two sneak into Ganzack's stronghold to free the villagers and rescue Nami. A short adventure comedy with a fantasy streak, this OVA was first screened at the Jump Super Anime Tour '98.
