Heizou doesn't investigate cases, he absorbs the rot of Edo, one criminal at a time, and the show trusts you to see what the system actually costs him. Each episode is a closed door with a different kind of failure waiting behind it, framed by a soundtrack that sounds like someone finally got period drama music right. Nobody talks about this one. That needs to stop.

In Edo-period Japan, Heizou Hasegawa serves as the chief officer charged with keeping the city safe from crime and arson. Adapted from the historical novel series Onihei Hankachou, the drama shows him delivering justice to wrongdoers and leading the effort to stamp out arsonists and robbers. In 1783, during the Tenmei era, he heads the department that hunts down the worst thieves and criminals in the region, and his reputation earns him the feared name Devil Heizou. The TV series runs for 13 episodes.
