Rope and Akira take twenty minutes to walk to a movie theater and somehow that's the entire show. It's the anti-narrative: two animals moving through mundane space, getting sidetracked by nothing in particular, treating every interruption like it matters. The show doesn't build to anything. It just lets you sit inside their pace, which is closer to how actual time feels than anything trying to tell you a story.

Rope is a rabbit trying to get to the movie theater, and his senpai Akira, a squirrel, is along for the trip. Getting there turns out to be a long affair that keeps being interrupted, and that roundabout journey is the premise of this slice-of-life comedy. The 16-episode special was the first series from the GiftMovie Project, and it screened in 2009 between commercials at every TOHO Cinemas location, 57 in all.
