// WHY IT HITS

Nine different animators, nine different visions of what happens when you build something and it develops a will of its own. Some segments are gorgeous and haunting, others are pure kinetic chaos, one is basically a slapstick comedy about a robot and a kid. The anthology format means you're never sure what tone you're walking into next, which keeps you alert in a way single-narrative anime can't touch. This is what happens when you give masters of the craft a blank check and a single theme. The real discovery is that "robots" was never the point, it's always been about the people who make them.

SYNOPSIS

Nine different visions of robots collide in this anthology film where Japan's most imaginative animators each take on the theme of mechanical creation. What binds these wildly distinct stories is a single question: what happens when humanity builds something that can think, feel, or simply exist alongside us? One segment spins a darkly comedic tale of a mad scientist and his cobbled-together creation. Another finds intimacy in the presence of a machine. A third chases surreal horror through mechanical nightmares. A fourth celebrates a robot's lonely vigil. The styles shift constantly, the moods swing wildly, but each piece grapples with the same core tension: the strange responsibility and unexpected consequences of playing creator. The animation itself varies wildly from segment to segment, each director stamping their own aesthetic onto their corner of this carnival. Some segments run playful and whimsical. Others turn unexpectedly melancholic or genuinely disturbing. What emerges is less a unified narrative and more a funhouse mirror reflecting different facets of humanity's relationship with its own creations.
