You sit down thinking you're watching a boxing tournament arc, and instead you get five Japanese fighters forced into a gauntlet that's less about winning and more about proving they exist on a world stage that doesn't believe they do. Black Shaft isn't a villain with depth, he's a gate, indifferent and immovable, and every fight becomes an argument about whether Japanese boxing matters at all. The show burns through character development in real time because there's no time for anything else; Ryuuji and his crew don't get speeches about their dreams, they get ten rounds to make you believe those dreams are legitimate.

Right after Ryuuji Takane wins the Champion Carnival, American Junior Champion Black Shaft shows up and challenges Japan's best boxers, just before the World Tournament. Ryuuji, Takeshi Kawai, Kazuki Shinatora, Ishimatsu Katori and Jun Kenzaki must prove to Shaft and to the world that they belong among the top fighters. Shaft's team is not made of ordinary boxers: it includes a lifer from death row, the head of a tough American gang, a mysterious woman and a fighter called the Dark Emperor of the South. As a backup, he also talks with Italian Junior Champion Don Giuliano. The result is a 12-episode action sports series built around boxing.
