Naruto gets to have parents in this one, and the movie knows exactly what that means to him. The alternate universe isn't just a gimmick for comedy, it's permission to show what he actually wanted instead of what he had to accept. Everyone else is a joke. Naruto finally isn't.

Back in Konohagakure after beating a band of supposed Akatsuki members, the young ninja celebrate with their families. Naruto envies them and longs for the parents he never knew, while Sakura is fed up with her embarrassing parents and wishes she had none. Their argument is cut short when a masked man traps them in a Genjutsu and sends them to an alternate world. There, almost everyone they know has the opposite personality, people who died are alive, and Naruto's parents, Minato and Kushina, are living while Sakura's parents died as heroes. Only Naruto and Sakura remain themselves. At first they enjoy the lives they always wanted, until a new threat forces them to defend this other Konoha and search for a way home.
