Dai Mugen gave up the drums after losing a competition to his rival Rin Tanba, a defeat that left him unsure where his heart lies. Then he meets Goutetsu, an odd creature who calls himself a god. Seeing hidden potential in the boy, Goutetsu names Dai his oyakata, a coach for kamizumo, a sumo contest fought between gods. In these bouts a god draws strength from the drumbeats of its oyakata, so Dai has to take up the mallets again. As the pair win match after match, Dai faces his self-doubt and rediscovers his passion while aiming for the highest stage of kamizumo.
