These are not side stories pretending to matter. They are pure character demolition, four guys you already love getting systematically disassembled for comedy. The comedy lands because it comes from understanding these characters deeply enough to know exactly how they would embarrass themselves when no one is watching. Each episode is permission to laugh at them without guilt. If you want Saiyuki's story to advance, this will irritate you.
