A kid finds a seal cub in a cave and the entire film becomes about learning what it costs to love something wild enough to disappear. After moving to the island of Sardinia, Tottoi, who is fascinated by nature, spends every day exploring its beaches and caves. In an isolated cave he stumbles upon a seal cub and its mother, members of a rare species close to extinction. The cub's comical movements and innocence charm him, as does the mother's dignity, and he quickly grows attached to them. He keeps the seals a secret, until uncaring adults learn of them. Claiming it is for the sake of preservation, they plan to capture the seals for an aquarium. However painful it is to part with his new friends, Tottoi must fight for the animals' welfare and see them freed into the sea. The film is a gentle adventure drama about wonder, wildlife and the pride of wild creatures.
