The magic system costs something every time you use it, and Tiara pays in ways that compound across the series until her entire mission collapses under what it demanded of her. She arrives ready to save her beloved as a hero. She leaves having learned the person worth saving was herself all along. Romance in mahou shoujo usually means a reward waiting at the end of the tunnel; this one means the tunnel itself was always the trap. The OVA format lets it hit hard and leave before it can soften, six episodes to dismantle everything a magical girl story promises you, then walk away.

Tiara lives a double life. By day she passes as an ordinary schoolgirl, and by night she hunts monsters using her shamanic powers. She and her familiar, Japolo, have come to Earth from the Guardian World to recover the Throne of Yord, a talisman that powers that realm and was stolen by the man she loves. When she tracks the thief to his lair, she finds her archrival already there, standing guard over him. Her old friend Lena is also after the artifact, and Kagetsu, a negater who can cancel magic, is closely tied to it. As dark secrets come to light, Tiara is torn between duty and the people she cares about, and her only chance of surviving may be to betray her mission.
