Kuu is insufferable, but that's the point, watching her stumble into the actual emotional stakes of the Absolute Angels' existence forces you to care about girls who should be nothing but pretty antagonists. The romance doesn't arrive as a subplot; it's the entire reason the plot keeps fracturing and reconstructing itself. By episode six, you stop asking what's happening and start asking what these girls actually want from each other, and that question never stops burning.

Kuu Shiratori is a high school girl living in Academia, a huge academic city that stands as a symbol of humanity's recovery ten years after the worst disaster mankind has ever faced. She enjoys school, yet her everyday routine feels empty to her. She keeps having the same dream, in which a prince comes to meet her and take her away. Then, while the students prepare for the school festival, that prince, Kyoshiro Ayanokoji, shows up in real life and asks her to go with him, just as he did in the dream. Kuu soon ends up in conflict with the Absolute Angels, beautiful girls who survive by feeding on human life force and whose godlike strength could destroy the world. The question is whether they are demons of destruction or innocent girls caught in a fate they cannot escape. The series is a drama and romance.
