A captain carries the weight of an ambush that killed his entire squad three years ago. Every mission after is him trying to prove that trust wasn't stupidity, that the people who died under his command meant something. The Phantom Squad rebuilds around that scar, not despite it.

Year 2060. Supernatural crises of every kind prompt the Organization of Emergency Affairs to gather top agents from around the globe into the Bureau of Paranormal Defense. Its finest members make up an ace unit called the Phantom Squad. Three years ago, Captain Hao Yuan placed too much trust in the wrong people and led his team into an ambush set by Darrick's squad during a treasure retrieval mission. Nearly every member died, and Hao Yuan fell from a cliff after Darrick sabotaged him. By accident he absorbed the treasure itself, the Stone of Immortality, which revived him and gave him the power to pause and rewind time. Unwilling to confront his past, he has lived quietly under a hidden identity, looking after Gu Xiao Xi, the sister of a fallen comrade. Then a blue virus strikes Y City: blue veins creep across a victim's skin until the disease proves fatal, and Gu Xiao Xi catches it. To find a cure, Hao Yuan returns to the Bureau and forms a new Phantom Squad with the capable agent Xia Rou, the eccentric young genius Tong Xiaoxiao and the gangster Zhan Peng, who has a chuunibyou streak.
