Soki's journey across a Japan suffocating under demonic occupation feels less like a story and more like walking through someone's fever dream of the source material. The animation carries weight the narrative can't, gorgeous backgrounds and deliberate character moments trying to anchor a plot that fractures between scenes like a memory you're struggling to piece together. This works if you surrender to it as pure atmosphere instead of fighting for coherence; that's the only way a one-episode OVA about burning demon trees in the sixteenth century becomes haunting instead of hollow.

Fifteen years have passed since Nobunaga fell, yet darkness creeps back across Japan. His successor, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, calls upon the demonic Genma to cast their shadow over the country once more, and the creatures run rampant across the land. Soki, a powerful warrior who wields the dark power of the Oni, learns of Hideyoshi's scheme and sets out on a journey to burn the Genma trees and defeat the demons. The OVA is a compilation of cut-scenes from the video game of the same name, released on DVD separately from the game.
