A team of incompetent spies shouldn't work as a premise, five episodes in, you're waiting for the show to prove why you should care. Then it shows you what they're actually training for, and suddenly every dumb gadget joke and failed mission lands different. The girls are so earnestly likeable that watching them fail becomes watching them survive, and that shift from comedy to something with actual weight happens before you realize the show switched genres on you.

Lily wants to be a spy, but she's terrible at it. A decade after the Great War showed how deadly modern weapons had become, nations wage their conflicts through espionage, and Lily hopes to serve the Din Republic. Doubting herself after struggling in her studies, she jumps at an offer of provisional graduation through a mysterious team called Lamplight, or Tomoshibi. There she meets six other girls with their own academic troubles, and Klaus, a quirky spy who has never failed a job. He tells them they must pull off an Impossible Mission, infiltrating the Galgad Empire after only one month of training, with odds of failure above 90 percent. Skeptical but out of options, the girls agree to work together under his guidance, though the real reason behind their classroom is darker than they suspect. Based on a light novel series, the show mixes action, comedy, drama and mystery.
