A happy alien with magic gadgets arrives to fix a broken kid, then discovers some things can't be fixed by anyone but the person living through them. The show doesn't flinch when it shows what ruined her, doesn't look away, doesn't soften it into something watchable. By episode three you stop waiting for Takopi to save Shizuka and start watching her save herself, one unbearable day at a time.

An alien from Happy Planet called Takopi lands on Earth with one goal: to spread happiness. Struggling to survive at first, he is taken in by Shizuka Kuze, a gloomy fourth grader who gives him his name and returns every day to feed him. Grateful, Takopi resolves to repay her by bringing back her smile, using the gadgets he brought from home. Yet he understands little of how human society works, and Shizuka's troubles at school and at home run deeper than he realizes. However grim things become, Takopi stays cheerful and keeps trying new ways to help her, even as his mission starts to spiral out of control. The show is a short psychological drama with science fiction elements, asking whether pure goodwill and clever devices can truly make a child happy.
