Post-war Tokyo, 1948. Kanna Kusakabe has just started her second year of high school when she meets Akihiko Chuzenji, the school's new Japanese language teacher. Odd, seemingly supernatural events keep cropping up around Kanna, whose eagerness to help others tends to land her in trouble. When a classmate is said to have been cursed to death by a ghost, she sneaks into the school at night to look into it, and the ghost turns out to be Chuzenji himself. He is working in a hidden room full of forbidden books and wants to keep it secret, so he lets the other students believe Kanna drove the spirit away. Her classmates now treat her as an occult expert and keep pushing strange cases on her. Each time, she heads to the library prep room to ask the surly, scholarly Chuzenji for help, and he sets out to prove that reason beats superstition.
